Archive: GRENADA 2004

This group of images was made while I visited the island of Grenada in late 2004. The small island had been recently devastated by Hurricane Ivan. Most structures and a large portion of the jungles were severely damaged. Ivan's fury had nearly wiped out the entire tourism industry, one of the countries main sources of foreign exchange.

As a foreign visitor at a difficult time, I focused on making images that would speak about Grenada's struggle in an optimistic light. My initial observations of the island were its vivid landscape, the rich smell of spice in the air and how welcoming people were despite hard times. I wanted to depict my emotional connection with the environment through colorful, living moments. My aim was to make images in which people decide to move on and the rhythm of daily life steadily steps up its beat once again.
